Spring Cleaning: Tips for Freshening Your Upholstery

Spring is around the corner, and you know what that means: it’s time for spring cleaning! And we’re not just talking about a good dusting and vacuuming. One thing that’s a little tough to toss in the washing machine is your couch, so here are some tips for freshening up your upholstery.

Whether you want to do a full 30-minute, invested deep cleaning, or a more thorough than usual couch spruce up, spring is a great time to wash your couch. You’ve been cooped up inside all winter – likely sitting on your couch – and the cushions could use a little freshening up, right?

For a quick and thorough clean, remove the cushions from your couch and vacuum each of them using quick, repetitive movements. Then, pick up a dry-cleaning sponge and use it to wipe down any upholstered areas. Rubbing this sponge against the fabric of your furniture will remove dirt, oil and other things that can cause discoloration to the fabric.

You should also remove any slipcovers or pillowcases. Check the care instructions, and wash Cleaning the couchaccordingly. Your higher-end fabrics may be hand-wash or dry-clean only, but most cotton fabrics will be washable in your regular old washing machine.

Next, take off any pillows or cushions, and bring them outside. Beat them on either side with a clean tennis racket to loosen and remove dirt, and then place them on a clean sheet. Bring the pillows back inside.

Finish by vacuuming the whole thing from top to bottom using short, repetitive motions. Use a lint roller or a piece of tape rolled around your fingers to remove excess dust or pet hair – a common problem.
